HRM TV: What is abandonment of employment?


When an employee leaves their post, would you know how to deal with abandonment of employment?

During a recent client meeting, Hannah was confronted with a situation that raised some concerns about abandonment of employment. An employee who was on unpaid leave contacted their HR coordinator to enquire about returning to work, and they were told that because there was no longer a role for them, they had the option of abandoning their employment. Is this how it works?

This case illustrates some of the more confusing aspects of abandonment of employment. Hannah tells us what it means, what it looks like and what to do about it.
